Dear Ku-band and Ka-band Satcom Experts,

In preparation for Thursday (September 5th) AEEC Ku-band and Ka-band Satcom (KSAT) Subcommittee online conference, John Rodgers (The Boeing Company), has submitted a few thermal/cooling design questions (mainly directed at array suppliers/designers). (WebEx invitation can be found at the end if this email).

Relevance: At the 2019 AEEC General Session, APIM 19-001 (see attachment) authorizing Supplement 1 to ARINC Characteristic 792: Second-Generation Ku-Band and Ka-Band Satellite Communication System, was approved.
Adding antenna thermal management guidance was among the items listed in APIM 19-001.

…Just a few questions really to better understand current design directions:

  *   Do they anticipate the arrays require passive and/or active cooling at cruise? I wouldn’t guess so but all depends on their ability to shed heat.
  *   Will the thermal output evenly distributed over the surface (bottom, top, sides) of the array? Or concentrated only in isolated areas? Or be directed upward? (my favorite would be the latter)
  *   What is the expected nominal operating thermal output? 50% of maximum? 80% of maximum? Or does it fluctuate wildly?
  *   Are they designing in thermal shutoffs or dynamic thermal backoffs to help save the equipment? If so, to what design assurance levels are they targeting?
