Reminder:
The next AEEC Data Link (DLK) Subcommittee web conference is scheduled for Thursday, July 23rd.
This is a joint meeting with RTCA SC-214 and EUROCAE WG-92.
The meeting will start at 1100 Eastern USA/1700 Central European.

The following two main topics were discussed during the July 20th web conference:

  1.  VDL interference at the terminal area
     *   Commonly caused by LCD lights
     *   Ground Station is uplinks to the VHF Digital Radio

                                                               i.      The A/C does not communicate with the Ground Station due to the interference, probably considers the channel occupied

     *   Once the A/C moves a few feet from the gate, communication is restored; the Gnd Station receives a bunch of RR frames
     *   Looking at possible discrepancy in the standards (ICAO Tech Doc/MASPS/ARINC 631

                                                               i.      Is measurement taken at the receiver (VDR) or Antenna)?, are cable/antenna losses accounted for

     *   Is the location of the VHF antenna a factor ?

Most logical solution is for airports to remove the apparent “complaint” LCDs
Airborne changes not recommended (hard to retrofit all the avionics equipment in the field)

  1.  Connectionless VDLM2
     *   Reviewed “connectionless VDLM2 effect on Standards” (MASPS and MOPS, ICAO Doc 9776 (Tech Manual), ARINC 631-9, ARINC 758 and ARINC 618-9), doc maintained by M. Matyas (The Boeing Company)

                                                               i.      Recent inputs from Mike Matyas (The Boeing Company), Christophe Visee (Eurocontrol) and Tom McGuffin (Spectralux)

     *   Still to determine:

                                                               i.      Should IPS be supported by connectionless VDLM2 only? or can it also be supported over connected VDL? requirement or only a recommendation (for interim period?)

           *   Depends on DSPs

                                                             ii.      Will orange protocol only support IPS

  *   VDL interference white paper by Steve Leger Collins Aerospace IMS
  *   Calculations provided by Dr. Dongsong Zeng (The MITRE Corporation)
  *   Standards Comparison by Christophe Visee (Eurocontrol)
  *   Connectionless VDLM2 Impact on Standards by Mike Matyas, (The Boeing Company)
